A boat with a roof and seats where you can enjoy banquets and meals on board 'Yakatabune.'  The total length is about 20 meters and it has the capacity for 100 people. Half of the space of the boat is used for guests.  As the rivers improved in the Edo period, it spread to the Daimyo and the merchant and it became a popular way to enjoy cherry-blossom viewing, moon viewing and fireworks. Especially the yakatabune in Sumida River was said to be decorated with gold and silver lacquer and that it was gorgeous. After that its popularity declined due to the prohibition of building large boats in the year 1682. And then after the Meiji restoration its build started again but it lost its momentum because of changes in culture and the deterioration of rivers. But thanks to the improvement of water quality, its use has increased again. And then it became the way it is now.
